How to make money on photos on the Internet
The camera for many people is a familiar tool in everyday life. For some, photography is just a hobby, while others make good money on it. Professional and semi-professional cameras are now available to most people. How do photographers make money? Most often, through photo shoots and photography of various events, or by opening your own photo studio. Another great way that can generate income is to sell photos on the Internet. Moreover, for such a mini-business it is not at all necessary to be a professional photographer. And the places where you can sell your photographic creations are called photo stocks or photo banks.
Just say that you are unlikely to make a lot of money selling photos on the Internet, especially if you are doing it unprofessionally. But with good photography skills and a large number of photographs on different topics, you can get quite a good additional income to your main one.
The technique that you will use is a camera, even a regular digital one with the number of pixels from 5 and above is quite suitable. But if you have a professional or semi-professional camera, then your chances of success, of course, increase.
You do not have to graduate from the school of photographers or take photo courses. But if you have not done photography before, we advise you to sit a couple of weeks on the forums and blogs of experienced photographers and study their craft. At the very least, you should master the skills of how to correctly build a composition in a photograph, choose successful camera angles and do minimal photo editing in graphic editors.
In order to start your photo business, you need to take at least 100-200 photos. And if you like this business, and you make 1000 successful shots, then in general it will be excellent.
What photos to take?
First, take photos on different topics – the city, nature, animals, people, professions, beauty. The more they will be, the more likely they are to be downloaded and you will receive your payment. However, it often happens that the same successful photo is downloaded a large number of times, and only this one photo brings good profit.
In order to successfully sell a photograph on stock, it must carry a certain semantic load. The meaning of photography can be negative (the theme of sadness, sadness, rage, etc.), however, it should still cause a positive feeling in relation to its quality. The photo should be bright, clearly focused. Size – maximum possible, format – JPG. Most stock photos are pre-processed in graphic editors to make them look more presentable. In addition, competent processing will be able to hide some quality flaws. However, do not overdo it with special effects. Too “overloaded” photos will become less attractive, and moderators may not allow them to be sold on stock. If you photograph different objects, then watch what background they are on. Sometimes a suitable background is selected longer than the subject itself. It is important that the background is “in the subject” and complement the subject.
Where to sell?
There are a lot of photo stocks and photo banks. And everyone has their own requirements for uploaded photos. At some of the most advanced and popular, there are even special exams that photostockers must pass in order to be able to upload and sell their images. On less popular photo banks there are no such tests for participants, so it is better for beginners to start with them. For example, the Fotolia.com photo stock is just for beginners and not yet experienced stock photographers. The requirements for participants and the photos themselves are minimal. The only condition is that the photographer must confirm his copyright to the photos uploaded by him. However, the cost of one downloading photos on Fotolia.com is also low – about 0.14-5 dollars.
Steeper photo banks put forward their requirements, sometimes quite stringent. For example, the popular Istockphoto.com photo stock will require three photos from you, which will be your exam. They will be carefully checked for various parameters, in particular, quality, professional approach, originality, choice of subjects. After that, the administration makes a decision whether to allow you to stock as a seller or not. Passing this exam the first time is not easy, however, you can retake it an unlimited number of times with a frequency of one month.
Sutterstock.com is one of the most popular and sought after photo stocks. Due to such high positions, it’s naturally not easy for a photo seller to get to this resource. You still have to pass a certain exam, sending 10 photos already. Therefore, choose your best shots only. If approved, you can already freely upload your photos for sale.
