Personal experience: how I struggle with procrastination in social networks. Without fanaticism and masochism

IMHO, the main harm of procrastination in social networks – endless paging of the tape, excessive viewing of entertaining pictures / videos, reading fray in the comments, etc. – the death of productivity. Especially if it all starts right from waking up, and you’re a freelancer.

A typical situation: you watch 1-2-3 videos on YouTube, then new posts in a couple of Telegram channels, then you stick in the VK feed and flood chat, and then half a day has passed. And although you have not earned a single ruble, you are already tired and want to relax.

The trouble is that sitting in social networks and working at a computer are the same from the point of view of the body, because there is no normal change of activity. I tell you how to deal with such procrastination without fanaticism, idealism and masochism.

1. Realize the problem – determine where you are now and where to move
To achieve a result, you need to set a goal, and before that – determine the current state of affairs. Awareness of the problem = half of its solution. In the case of addiction to social networks, you should first measure how much time is spent on them every day.

If you do not track anything, it seems that you are distracted for a very short time. And you don’t have time to work, because there are few hours in a day 🙂

YouTube and Facebook themselves can help. The applications show how much time the user spent; there you can also include reminders about the need for rest.

Another option is specialized programs for time management, for example, RescueTime. You can set goals for productive / distracting time, a tracking schedule, categories of software and sites (for example, if the FB is only for work, attribute it to “productive”). The free version is enough.

But when the duration of procrastination in social networks is known, it is necessary to move away from the shock and calculate how much it costs to sit there without harm to productivity. That is, to determine the goal – point B, which is to be achieved. For clarity, watches merged on social networks can be converted into money (and even more horrified).

2. Declare war on the time killers – minimize the risk of freezes in social media and the loss of time / effort / money
I know such working methods:

Disable all pop-ups and sound notifications, because this is the most evil. They are very distracting, interfere with focus, catastrophically reduce productivity. Without tweeters and pop-ups, it is much better to live.

Remove extra subscriptions if the feed and other parts of social networks are needed for work. For self-training, searching for experts and new topics, it is important to read niche communities, experts, and opinion leaders. But in this case, it is worth at least unsubscribing or hiding all sorts of grandmother acquaintances, friends from distant childhood and sons of mother’s friends.
But in general, I think it is better to read industry news / thematic blogs purposefully, for example, through newsletters, telegram channels or feedly aggregators. So nothing superfluous will be mixed in, as it happens in algorithmic tapes.

Set a specific time for visiting social networks. For example, to do this maximum during the lunch break, when the most productive morning hours were used for their intended purpose. Even better – in the evening, closer to night, when there is little left of working capacity, anyway.
Just do not open the tape during business hours. It is clear that many people experience FOMO, but believe me – the end of the world will not happen if you read all the posts after six in the evening, for example. To avoid the temptation to open a damned tape with memes, seals and scandals, you can transfer all working communication to Slack – there is such a corporate messenger.

Digitize the fight against procrastination and dependence on social networks: see how long they began to sit there compared to how much time they spent before. Social networks have already firmly entered our lives, there’s no escape from them. The main thing is to regulate and be able to control the use of FB, VK, Instagram, YouTube, etc. Good luck in this difficult matter!
